Overview

In recent years, it became apparent that the cemeteries in the area were reaching their capacity, and that there was a need for a new cemetery to serve the population of Oromocto and the surrounding area. The Town of Oromocto, through the Mayor, Council and Staff recognized this need and were determined to remedy the problem.

A committee was formed in January 2006 to start the process. In the ensuing months, the Town made available a ten-acre parcel of land in Oromocto West and has committed funding of $350,000.00 over 3 years (2007-2009) toward the startup costs. A Board of Directors was formed and the Oromocto Pioneer Gardens Cemetery Company Inc. was incorporated on 28 September 2007. This community cemetery is serving all denominations. The Company is a non-profit, self-sustaining volunteer-run organization.

Through our research, we have learned a great deal about the operation of a cemetery. We offer our clientele a variety of choices, whether they select traditional burial or cremation, and at prices and payment plans suited to every budget. We have learned that the number of people requesting cremation in Canada has been steadily increasing, although not as quickly in this area as elsewhere. That may be because people did not have attractive options for the inurnment of cremated remains.

We offer options in a setting that is welcoming, calm and appealing to the eye. As the word "Gardens" appears in our name, we hope to have many flowers and shrubs with seating areas where family members can visit, read if they wish, or meditate in comfort and enjoy their surroundings.

The Oromocto Pioneer Gardens Cemetery Committee is seeking new members who wish to be involved with an all-volunteer executive and director committee which makes all of the decisions regarding the day-to-day operation and does all the work for the upkeep of the cemetery.
